সাপ জিহ্বা দিয়ে বাতাস থেকে গন্ধের কণা সংগ্রহ করে ঘ্রাণ নিতে পারে।

সাপ যখন বারবার জিভ বাইরে বের করে, তখন বাতাসে থাকা সূক্ষ্ম রাসায়নিক বা গন্ধের কণা তাদের দ্বি-বিভক্ত জিভে আটকে যায়। এরপর জিভটি মুখে গুটিয়ে নেওয়ার পর সেই কণাগুলো মুখের ওপরের তালের একটি বিশেষ অঙ্গে গিয়ে লাগে, যাকে জ্যকবসন অঙ্গ বা ভোমেরোনাসাল অঙ্গ (Jacobson's organ) বলে। এই অঙ্গটি তখন গন্ধের কণাগুলো বিশ্লেষণ করে সাপকে আশেপাশের পরিবেশ, শিকার বা শত্রু সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়। গিরগিটির মতো কিছু অন্যান্য সরীসৃপও এভাবে জিভের সাহায্যে গন্ধ সংগ্রহ করে থাকে।

The process of a snake's sense of smell:

When a snake repeatedly flicks its tongue out, minute chemical or odor particles present in the air adhere to its forked tongue. Upon retracting the tongue into the mouth, these particles come into contact with a specialized organ on the roof of the mouth known as  vomeronasal organ (or Jacobson's organ).This organ then analyzes scent particles, providing the snake with information about its surroundings, prey, or predators. Some other reptiles, such as chameleons, also gather scents using their tongues in this manner.
