Meaning of the word ‘Boycott’:
The literal meaning of the word ‘Boycott’ is to shun or refuse to deal with a person, organization, or country.
Origin of the word ‘Boycott’:
In 1880, in County Mayo, Ireland, an English land agent named Charles Cunningham Boycott used to impose exorbitant rents on farmers and evict them if they protested. In protest, local farmers and workers subjected him to a non-violent social and economic ostracism. No one would work on his land, merchants refused to sell him goods, and even the postman stopped delivering his mail; as a result, he became completely isolated. It was from his name that the practice of shunning an individual or an institution as a form of protest came to be known as a ‘boycott’.
'Boycott' means the deliberate refusal to maintain social, commercial, or economic relations with an individual, institution, or country.
