প্রতি বছর সাহারা মরুভূমি থেকে প্রায় ১৮–২২ কোটি টন ধূলিকণা ও অতি সূক্ষ্ম বালুকণা বাতাসে ভেসে আটলান্টিক মহাসাগর পাড়ি দিয়ে উত্তর ও দক্ষিণ আমেরিকায় পৌঁছে। উত্তর আফ্রিকার তীব্র গরম এবং শক্তিশালী ঝড় (যেমন: হাবুব) এই ধূলিকণাকে বায়ুমণ্ডলের প্রায় ৫,০০০ থেকে ২০,০০০ ফুট উঁচুতে তুলে দেয়। পরবর্তীতে, শক্তিশালী ট্রেড উইন্ডস এই ধূলিকণাকে প্রায় ৫,০০০–৭,০০০ মাইল দূর পর্যন্ত বহন করে।
এই ধূলিকণায় থাকা ফসফরাস দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার অ্যামাজন রেইনফরেস্টের মাটির উর্বরতা বজায় রাখতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে। পাশাপাশি সাহারার শুষ্ক বায়ুস্তর আটলান্টিকে হ্যারিকেনের সৃষ্টি ও তীব্রতা কমাতেও সহায়তা করে। তবে সাময়িকভাবে বাতাসের মান কিছুটা কমে যেতে পারে, যা অ্যাজমা রোগীদের জন্য অস্বস্তির কারণ হতে পারে।
NASA Earth Observatory ও NOAA-এর স্যাটেলাইট চিত্রে প্রতি বছর এই বিশাল Saharan Dust Plume স্পষ্টভাবে দেখা যায়।

Every year, approximately 180–220 million tons of dust and ultra-fine sand particles from the Sahara Desert are carried by the wind across the Atlantic Ocean to reach North and South America. Intense heat and powerful storms (such as *haboobs*) in North Africa lift these dust particles to altitudes of about 5,000 to 20,000 feet. Subsequently, strong trade winds transport this dust across distances of roughly 5,000–7,000 miles.
The phosphorus contained in these dust particles plays a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility in South America's Amazon rainforest. Additionally, the dry air layer from the Sahara helps suppress the formation and intensity of hurricanes in the Atlantic. However, air quality may temporarily deteriorate, potentially causing discomfort for asthma patients.
This massive Saharan dust plume is clearly visible every year in satellite imagery from NASA Earth Observatory and NOAA.
