Does Being Powerful or Wealthy Put Someone Above the Law?
International Desk:
Can money, power, and influence place a person above the law? This debate has once again come to the forefront following a remark by Elon Musk, one of the world's wealthiest individuals, raising questions about democracy, the rule of law, and accountability.
On X (formerly Twitter), the social media platform he owns, Musk wrote, “He who strikes with the sword shall die by the sword.” He made the remark in response to a Politico report concerning Democrats’ plans to investigate Musk’s activities if they win the election.
Musk also wrote, “Those who choose to fight me will learn that I will find the person actually pulling the strings behind the scenes, and go straight for the head instead of chasing the loyal puppets.”
His remarks suggest a hardline stance toward political opponents, along with the possibility of taking countermeasures in response to potential investigations. However, his precise intentions and what actions he may take next remain unclear.
Whenever investigations into the activities of influential individuals arise in the political arena, the issue of impartial enforcement of the law inevitably comes into focus. Regardless of whether a person is wealthy, powerful, or politically influential, allegations against them should be investigated on the basis of evidence, the law, and due legal process. Equally, politically motivated retaliation or harassment under the guise of an investigation is unacceptable.
Musk has frequently drawn attention for controversial statements and has faced criticism over the promotion of conspiracy theories. His latest remarks therefore extend beyond a personal or political dispute; they also raise broader questions about power, political accountability, and the rule of law.
The central question is: Does the law apply equally to everyone, or do some people enjoy the privilege of escaping accountability because of their wealth and influence?
The fundamental principle of the rule of law in a democratic system is that no one is above the law. No one should be declared guilty before allegations are proven. At the same time, impartial investigations must not be obstructed because of an individual's power, wealth, or status. Ultimately, it should be evidence and the law—not a person's identity or influence—that determine the extent of their responsibility.
