সোনা তো একটা ধাতুই, তাহলে বিশ্বব্যাপী সোনার এত কদর কেন? 

সোনা কেবল একটি উজ্জ্বল ধাতুই নয়, বরং এর বহুমুখী গুণাগুণ এবং ঐতিহাসিক গুরুত্ব একে বিশ্বব্যাপী অমূল্য করে তুলেছে। সোনার এই বিপুল কদর মূলত ৪টি প্রধান কারণে

: 

• স্থায়িত্ব ও অবিনশ্বরতা: লোহার মতো সোনায় মরিচা ধরে না, তামা বা রূপার মতো কালো হয় না। হাজার বছর ধরে মাটিতে বা পানির নিচে থাকলেও এটি তার উজ্জ্বলতা হারায় না। এই অবিনশ্বর গুণের কারণেই একে সম্পদের দীর্ঘমেয়াদী ভাণ্ডার বলা হয়।

• বিরলতা ও উত্তোলনের কঠিন প্রক্রিয়া: সোনা প্রকৃতিতে খুবই সীমিত। গবেষকদের মতে, এ পর্যন্ত উত্তোলিত সমস্ত সোনা দিয়ে প্রায় ৪টি অলিম্পিক সুইমিং পুল ভর্তি করা সম্ভব। মাটির গভীর থেকে সোনা উত্তোলন করাও অত্যন্ত ব্যয়বহুল এবং শ্রমসাধ্য কাজ, যা এর দাম বাড়িয়ে দেয়।

• সহজ নমনীয়তা ও উজ্জ্বলতা: ১ আউন্স  (২৮.৩৫ গ্রাম) সোনাকে পিটিয়ে ৯ বর্গমিটারের পাত বা অবিশ্বাস্য সরু তারে রূপান্তর করা যায়। এর এই নমনীয়তা এবং চিরস্থায়ী জৌলুসের কারণেই প্রাচীনকাল থেকে অলঙ্কার হিসেবে সোনার এত চাহিদা।
